Bishop Don Lance Weakly, 68 , resident of Cape Girardeau died Sunday, November 30, 2014 at Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau. He was born May 15, 1946 in Oran to the late Richard Lance and Morean Weakly.
He was assistant Pastor at St. Matthews Baptist Church in Cape Girardeau during the late 1970’s. in the late 1980’s to the early 1990 he was the pastor of Union Baptist Church in Pinhook and was later elevated to the title of Bishop. He was also engaged in radio ministry for many years, broadcasting from KYMO in East Prairie
He was a former mayor of Haywood City where brought many improvements to the community during his reign. He also brought the New Morning Star Food Bank to Haywood City and helped with the local summer food program. He also served as sheriff of Haywood City.
Rev. Weakly was also inspirational for bring the East Missouri Action Agency to the Bootheel.
On December 8, 1972 he was united in marriage to Ethel Eggleston who survives of Cape Girardeau.
In addition to his wife he is survived by four sons and a daughter-in-law, Eddie and Monet Jenkins of Nashville and Melvin Burrnell of Minneapolis, MN, Tavis Betts of Cape Girardeau and Kendall Steele of Belleville, IL, one daughter , Ollie Betts of Cape Girardeau, three brother, Robert Hamilton of St. Louis, Carl Hamilton of Sikeston and Michael Hamilton of Haywood City, six sisters, Hattie Latham of Gulfport, MS, Earlene Thomas of Cape Girardeau, Mary Curry of St. Louis of St. Louis, Patricia Cagle of Caruthersville, Phyllis Rowe and Beverly Morris of Sikeston, a very special granddaughter whom he raised, Yolanda Betts of Cape Girardeau, six additional grandchildren, and a host of great grandchildren, great great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Friends may call Friday, December 5, 2014 from 12:00 noon until the funeral hour of 1:00 P. M. at Greater Dimensions Church in Cape Girardeau with the pastor, Apostle William bird officiating.
Interment will follow in Fairmount Cemetery in Cape Girardeau with the Williams Funeral Home of Charleston in charge of arrangements.
