Lorenzo Cortez Nelson, 48, resident of Cairo, Illinois, died April 13, 2016 at his home. He was born May 20, 1967 in Cairo to the late Joe Louis Nelson and Geraldine Carlton Nelson of Cairo.
Lorenzo was called by God and licensed to preach the gospel in 1992. He became Pastor of First Central Missionary Baptist Church in May 2005 and served faithfully in that capacity until his passing.
He married Serina Jones Nelson in June 1997, and she survives of the home.
In addition to his wife and mother, he is survived by one son, Lorenzo Cortez II of Cairo, and one daughter, Lanaya Dionne Nelson of Cairo, four brothers, Edgar (Deborah) Nelson of Gary, Indiana, Leslie Nelson of Phoenix, Arizona, Brian Nelson and Douglas Nelson of Cairo, seven sisters, Sandra (Harold) Frank of Gary, Indiana, Regina (Timothy) Brown, Pamela Carlton, Deborah (Bernard) Brown, Quavaline Nelson and Destiny Nelson all of Cairo, and Renata (Vernon) Moss of Mounds, Illinois, his mother-in-law, Glenda Jones of Cairo, and his brother-in-law, Kenneth Jones of Cape Girardeau, uncles, aunts, nephews, nieces, and other relatives and many friends.
Friends may call Saturday, April 23, 2016, 9:00 AM until the funeral hour of 11:00AM at Mighty Rivers Activity Center in Cairo with Superintendent Larry Lee and Minister Donna Hawkins officiating.
Interment will follow in Green Lawn Memorial Gardens in Villa Ridge, Illinois.
