Phillip Clemons, 66, resident of Charleston, died Thursday, January 25, 2018 at his home. He was born May 26, 1951 in Anniston, Missouri to the late Stennis Franklin Clemons and Velma Queenesther Germany Clemons.
He was a graduate of Charleston High School Class of 1970, in Charleston, Missouri, where he was active in basketball. Phil received a degree in Criminal Justice from Lincoln University in 1984.
After graduation from high school, Phil joined the United States Marine Corps. He was trained as an antitank assault man. In 1973, Phil joined the Missouri National Guard where he attained the rank of Master Sergeant. Phil served a total of 31 years of military service, and he received an honorable discharge.
He then became a truck driver for many years and later worked for the State Highway Department. His last employment was with the Charleston Public Schools, where he worked in the maintenance department as a custodian until his retirement.
When he returned to Charleston, he became an active member of the local NAACP and was a great help to many of the pastors in town. He was always there to lend a helping hand.
Phil was a member of Mercy Seat Missionary Baptist Church where served as a dedicated deacon. Phil spent countless hours working around the church.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by one son, Clifton Clemons, three brothers, Otha Lee Clemons, James Clemons and Stennis Clemons, and four sisters, Virginia Crowder, Pauline Lewis, Margaret Hunt and Etta Ruth Stockston.
He is survived by his two ex-wives, Regina Thompson Clemons and Nannette Williams Clemons, two sons, Eric Clemons and Phil Clemons of Jefferson City, Missouri, one daughter, Velma Clemons of Charleston, Missouri, two brothers, John Clemons of Cape Girardeau, Missouri and Joe Mitchell Brown of Detroit, Michigan, two sisters, Yvonne Mack of Jefferson City, Missouri and Ira Jo Gordon of Charleston, Missouri, five grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
Friends may call Friday, February 2, 2018 from 10:00 am until the funeral hour of 10:30 am at Mercy Seat Missionary Baptist Church in Charleston with the pastor, Reverend Arthur Cassell officiating. Inurnment will follow in the Mound City National Cemetery in Mound City, Illinois with full military honors.
