Edgar Darell Nelson, 53, resident of Cairo, Illinois, died February 4, 2019 at St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. He was born October 11, 1965 in Cairo, Illinois to the late Willie Jean Nelson.
Edgar attended Karnak Public Schools in Karnak, Illinois.
He was a member of Holy City Church of God in Christ in Cairo, Illinois.
Edgar loved playing basketball, walking, and being around his family and friends. He truly treasured his family, the love of his life, Vonella , his best friends, Yackie, Red, Allen, Richarddean, Paul, Buttercorn, and Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Mallory.
He is preceded in death by his mother, Willie Jean Nelson, two brothers, Terry Nelson and Henry Nelson, four uncles, Fred Nelson, Narvell Nelson, Joe Nelson and Thorton Nelson, two aunts, Mary Nelson and Corrine Donnell, one nephew, Christopher Nelson, and four cousins, Lorenzo Nelson, Regina Nelson, Murial Nelson and Christopher McDonald, and his longtime caregiver, Annie Pearl Matthews.
He is survived by his longtime love, Vonella Johnson, of Harvey, Illinois, one brother, Anthony (Jazzmin) Nelson of Paducah, Kentucky, four sisters, Diane Nelson of Cape Girardeau, Missouri, Margaret Nelson of Cairo, Illinois, Ladale Nelson of Meridian, Mississippi and Angela (Marvis) Purdiman of Columbia, Missouri, two aunts, Ollie Mae (Harlem) Williams of Louisville, Kentucky and Dorothy (Clinton) Jackson of Fayette, North Carolina, seven nephews, Isaiah (Dasha) Marks of Charlotte, North Carolina, James Johnson and Wayne Johnson of Colorado, Lafonzo (Shatina) Nelson, Tory (Jontae) Nelson and Marcus Nelson of Cairo, Illinois, and Marvis (Ebony) Purdiman of Columbia, Missouri, seven nieces, Rossetta Nelson of Paducah, Kentucky, Michelle Nelson, Wonda Purdiman, Natasha Purdiman and Brittany (Joshua) Sallee of Columbia, Missouri, Shameka Nelson of Cape Girardeau, Missouri, and Sherika (Rodrickus) Graham of Meridian, Mississippi, a very special friend, Linda Cerva of Harvey, Illinois, and a host of great nephews, great nieces, cousins, and other relatives and friends.
Friends may call Saturday, February 16, 2019 from 11:00 am until the funeral hour of 1:00 pm at First Central Missionary Baptist Church, 316 26th Street, in Cairo, Illinois with Reverend J.L. Posey officiating. Interment will follow in Green Lawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Villa Ridge, Illinois.
