Eugene Bishop

June 16, 1928 — December 30, 2019

Eugene Bishop, 91, resident of New Madrid, Missouri, died Monday, December 30, 2019 at Missouri Delta Medical Center in Sikeston, Missouri. He was born June 16, 1928 to the late Henry and Janie Bishop.

Eugene was educated in the public schools of Lilbourn, Missouri. He graduated from high school in Sikeston, Missouri.

Eugene was inducted into the U.S. Army on November 29, 1950. He was honorably discharged on September 13, 1956. While stationed in Germany, he received the Army Occupation Medal. Eugene was also a lifetime member of the VFW.

After his discharge, Eugene worked as a laborer and a mechanic. Eugene enjoyed watching basketball and football, playing cards and board games with family and friends.

Eugene married Virginia Young in 1956. They had one child, Jerry Lewis Bishop, in 1957. Later, Eugene married Louise Malone in Chicago, Illinois. To that union, one child was born, Denise Bishop. Eugene married Lois Nunn on June 26, 1977. Their relationship ended in divorce, but they remained close friends. He later married Maxine.

He was a firm believer in Christ at a young age. Eugene was baptized at the age of 12 and later became a Sunday School teacher at Mt. Olive M. B. Church in Lilbourn, Missouri. In later years, he served as a deacon and senior advisor at Lily of the Valley Baptist Church in Point Pleasant, Missouri.

He returned home to Lilbourn, Missouri in the early 1970's. He began working in his yard, repairing cars, lawnmowers, and almost anything on wheels. Eugene had a big heart. He was a wonderful neighbor and friend.

In addition to his parents, his first wife, Virginia, his second wife, Louise,  and his fourth wife, Maxine, all preceded him in death.

His memory will be cherished by his first cousins, Laura Shears, Willie Mae Hackney, Emma McGee, Sam (Barbara) Bishop, and Ann Watkins all of Chicago, Illinois, his “special” daughter, Reva Hooks of Sikeston, Missouri, his extended family, friends, and church family.

Friends may call Wednesday, January 8, 2020 from  10:00 A. M. until the funeral hour of 11:00 A. M. at the Williams Funeral Chapel in Charleston, Missouri.  Interment will follow in Missouri State Veteran Cemetery in Bloomfield, Missouri at 1:00 P. M. with full military rites.
