Gawain Bates

September 18, 1958 — June 5, 2023

GaWain Edward Bates. 64, died Monday, June 5, 2023 at his home in Charleston, Missouri. Affectionately known as Wayne, GaWain E. Bates, son of the late Charles Bates and Erma Pierce-Bates of Chicago, Illinois. He was born September 18, 1958 in Charleston.

Wayne graduated from Austin High School in Chicago, Illinois. He was a security guard for Chicago Reed Mental Health Center. He also served in the United States Army Reserve.

On August 31, 2013, Wayne married the love of his life, Narda Ellis.

Wayne was a kindhearted man who was always ready to help anyone in need. He enjoyed fishing with his grandmother, Rovine Pierce, watching sports, especially football, and riding his scooter while feeling the wind in his hair. He will truly be missed.

In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his brother, William L. Bates, Sr.

GaWain leaves behind his wife of the home, Narda Ellis-Bates, his mother, Erma Pierce Bates of Chicago, Illinois, three daughters, LaToya Runnels and Chadè  Johnson both of Chicago, Illinois, and LaNetha Ellis of the home, his siblings, Dorothy Space, Yolanda Branch, Dianna Bates, and Raquel Bates all of Chicago, Illinois, three grandsons, Jaylan Anderson, Aaden Scott, and Caleb Johnson all of Chicago, Illinois, two uncles, Raymond Pierce and Greg Pierce both of Chicago, Illinois, two special friends, Olivia Larry of St. Peters, Missouri, and Greg Frazier, Sr. of  Charleston, Missouri, as well as multiple nephews, nieces, cousins, and many friends.

Friends may call Saturday, June 17, 2023 at 11:00 A.M. until the funeral hour of 12:00 noon at the Williams Funeral Chapel in Charleston, Missouri. Interment will immediately follow in Oak Grove Cemetery in Charleston with the Williams Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
