Nona Lane

November 14, 1926 — August 22, 2023

Nona was the fourth of seven girls born to the late Roy and Levator Brewster on November 14, 1926 in Marvell, Arkansas.  She confessed a hope in Christ at an early age and was baptized at the Baptist Church at Big Lake near Charleston, Missouri.  Nona married Lommie Lane Sr. in 1946 to which three children were born.  She joined Sanders Chapel A.M.E. Church in Wyatt, Missouri, where she worshipped and served faithfully as a Sunday School teacher and a Stewardess for over 40 years until the church doors closed and merged with an affiliate, Perry Chapel A.M.E. Church in Charleston, Missouri. Nona also faithfully served at Perry Chapel A.M.E. Church as long as her health permitted.

What Nona wanted in her obituary:

I was born a farmer’s daughter and I married a farmer man.

At the appointed time I gave birth to 3 children.

I didn’t go to college and didn’t get a degree.

But as I lived my life it was the life that I lived and it was alright with me.

I was the mother of 3 children, Lommie Jr the oldest, Vallorie my second child, and Trent my baby.

I have many grandchildren who I know and they know me.

And if you knew me, you know all you need to know about me.

I have lived my life and whatever is written can’t change that.

It is just as you read, I am what I am, and I thank God for giving me a life to live that I enjoyed!

Additional things the hard headed children wanted to reflect on and share:

Nona prepared complete meals as early as age 9 for her father and sisters.  Everyone had a role to fill and she shared the stories on her doing her part!  Her lifetime was filled with various jobs including working in programs teaching children, working side by side with her husband on the farm and hauling coal in Missouri, traveling yearly to Michigan for the Cherry Harvest and cooking in restaurants. She was a member of the Heroines of Jericho and a member and former President of the Wilson City Women’s Club.

Nona also had a passion for and watched all levels of sports in person and on television.  She had her favorite players and favorite teams in basketball, football, baseball and softball.  Mrs. Lane was known by the children in Wilson City to be quite the softball pitcher and coach.  Her affection for the game was apparent during the Annual Labor Day Softball Tournaments.

Nona was affectionally called “Boss” by those who knew her well.  She maintained a loving home for her children, grandchildren and family which included those special nieces and nephews (and you definitely know who you are) who had the opportunity to spend extended quality time at Aunt Nona’s and Uncle Lommie’s while they were growing up.  Work, food, love, discipline, laughter and fun were plentiful!

Nona played a mean game of Chinese Checkers, Five Up and Spades (just ask the person next to you)!  Don’t mess with Boss on the card table. She would show you her hand and still beat you!!!  One of her favorite sayings on the card table was “Ain’t no fun when the rabbit got the gun”.

Nona cherished first and foremost her belief in God.  She was proud and committed to her work in the church, her work in the community and her love for her family.  She was gifted in loving and treating people kindly, even sometimes when a firm and tactful hand was needed.
