Omagene Gillespie, 84, of Charleson, Missouri died Thursday, June 8, 2023 at Sikeston Convalescent Center, in Sikeston, Missouri. She was born July 8, 1938 in Wyatt, Missouri to Ida Dunigan and later cared for by Jencie Horton Burnett.
She graduated from Lincoln High School in Charleston, Missouri. On April 26, 1958, Omagene was united in marriage to her loving husband, the late M.C. Gillespie. They were happily married for 34 years.
She was a dedicated member of Perry Chapel AME Church in Charleston, Missouri. Omagene enjoyed her role as a Sunday School teacher and serving on various program committees.
Omagene worked for Charleston R1 School District supporting students in elementary through high school. She enjoyed writing poems, doing word search, and had a passion for literature.
In addition to her late husband, she is preceded in death by three sons Tracy Gillespie, Bryan Gillespie, and Paul Gillespie who died at birth and one daughter Lana Mitchell. She leaves to cherish her precious memories two sons Gregory (Jillian) Gillespie of Miami, Florida and Schuyler (Alison) Gillespie of St. Paul, Minnesota, daughter Carla Gillespie of Minneapolis, Minnesota, son-in-law Ronald Mitchell, nephew Delmar Gillespie, family friends Lori Gant and Dora Brown and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, other relatives and friends.
The visitation will be Sunday, June 18, 2023 at 12:00PM until the funeral hour of 1:00 PM at the Bowden Civic Center, 700 Sy Williams Ave, in Charleson, Missouri with Pastor Carolyn Kent officiating. Interment will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery with the Williams Funeral Home of Charleston in charge of arrangements.
