Brother Sylvester Murphy , 99, resident of Sikeston, Missouri died Saturday, October 31, 2020 in his home surrounded by loved ones. He was born April 7, 1921 in Darling, Mississippi to the late Emit Murphy and Sara Kennedy Canada.
Sylvester accepted Christ as his personal savior at an early age in Mississippi. He was a faithful member of the St. John Missionary Baptist church under the leadership of Elder J L Nabors. He was just as faithful to Cornerstone Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor L J Nabors until his health started declining over the past few years.
Brother Sylvester was a loving husband and father who loved gardening and doing yard work. He was a great provider for his family, sometimes working multiple jobs to make ends meet. He worked for Bob's Salvage carpet and lumber, Sikeston Cotton Gin, and retired from the city of Sikeston Street Department and working there for over 19 years.
Brother Sylvester was loved by so many. He was always happy and we never saw him angry much at all. He saw good in everyone and always had a story to tell about his life when living in Mississippi.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five brothers, Isaiah Brewer, James Brewer, Jim Brewer, Riley White and Louis White, one sister, Willie Bee Coleman, and one son, Sylvester Murphy, Jr.
Brother Sylvester leaves to cherish his memories, his wife of 55 years, Ida Murphy, three sons, Larry Baker, Michael Baker, and Willie Murphy, one daughter, Shirley (Matthew) Marshall, all of Sikeston, Missouri, eight grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, and a host of relatives and friends.
Friends may call Friday, November 6, 2020 from 12:00 noon until the funeral hour of 1:00 pm at the Williams Funeral Chapel in Sikeston, Missouri. Interment will immediately follow in Sikeston Memorial Park.
